Preaching The Gospel To Yourself

In Sermons
Scripture: Psalm 103
Topics: Doctrine of Sin, Gospel, Contributor: Joel Webbon

In this psalm, David is not praying to the Lord. Instead, he is doing what all Christians should regularly do: David is preaching the Gospel to himself. David is not listening to his feelings and following his heart. David is recounting the promises of the Gospel and preaching to his soul. Rather than succumbing to his feelings of discouragement, David contends with these feelings. David rightly recognizes that in moments of discouragement, the goodness of God is often forgotten. Therefore, he begins to compile a list of all the benefits of the covenantal mercy of God, lest any of them should be forgotten.

1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” In this text, it appears as though confession is a “condition” for forgiveness. So how do we reconcile this text with the idea that Christians are completely forgiven of all their sins (including future sins) …

Jesus is not content with the private lordship of your precious little heart. Jesus is Lord of all. When Christians begin to live this way, persecution will come.
