The centurion demonstrates his faith in Christ’s power by comparing it to his own authority over his soldiers. As a centurion, he can command his soldiers to go or do something, and they obey without question. His orders are like laws to them—well-trained soldiers understand that they must follow their officer’s commands without debate. In the same way, Christ has the power to speak, and things happen immediately.
The centurion, though he is a subordinate officer, still has authority over his soldiers, and if that is true for him, it is even more true for Christ, who is the supreme ruler over all things. The centurion’s soldiers are obedient, going and coming at his command. We should be just as obedient to God: we must follow His word and the directions of His will, going where He sends us, returning when He calls us back, and doing what He asks of us. When God’s will conflicts with our own, we must put aside our desires and obey His will instead.
