Justification is God’s work “for” us, in Jesus Christ. Sanctification is God’s work “through” us, by the Holy Spirit. The objective reality of forgiveness is accomplished at the moment of conversion by our justification. However, the subjective feelings of forgiveness are often accomplished over time throughout our sanctification.
At the end of this life, the aged saint has experienced enough of God’s deliverance from trouble to believe that God will deliver him once more, even from death.
