The Church has never had a monopoly on self-righteousness. Never. Remember, the Pharisees were not Christians. By and large, the Pharisees were the ones who rejected Christ. Contrary to Evangelical opinion, you can be a God-hating Liberal and still be a raging Pharisee.
Those who fall away from the Faith almost always have this in common.
